How To: Adjust & Balance Professional Hair Shears
Adjusting Tension (Balancing) Professional Styling Shears:
Adjusting tension is an important part of getting the best results from your shears. To check the tension on your shears, lift the blade handle to a 90-degree angle and let it fall. Your shears should close approximately two thirds of the way. If it falls completely closed, the tension is too loose, and the scissors will fold the hair. If it is too tight, it will cause unnecessary wear and user fatigue. Your shears can have a variety of tension adjustment methods. The most common are listed below:
1. A precision flat screw holding the shears together which can be loosened or tightened with a screw driver or a coin placed in the groove on the top of the screw. Turn right to tighten and left to loosen.
2. A tension adjustable nut which can be loosened or tightened by turning with your thumb and finger.
3. Other, more expensive, shears may require a specialized key.

Styling Shears 101
Styling Shears 101 – Tips and Tricks:
- Clean your Styling Shears every day with dish soap/hand soap and warm water. This will clean any chemicals, hair, and dust stuck to the steel.
- Check Tension Daily: Make sure your tension is not too loose or too tight. If the styling shears tension is too loose, they will not cut; but if they are too tight, they will become dull much faster.
- Storage: Always keep your styling shears in a scissors case. We have seen far too many stylists with styling shears piled up in a drawer where they get easily damaged.
- Never use disinfectant spray on your hair styling shears, and don’t ever put them in Barbicide. These harsh chemicals will destroy the steel and cause it to rust.
Properly maintained hair styling shears will last you for years. Hair cutting shears are a hair stylist’s most important tool. As a stylist, you pay way too much for your shears to just let them become a victim to improper care.
